The
Academy of Indian Music, A Decade Of Achievements At A Glance
- Cultivating and fostering Indian music and culture in Australia and promote
it in the international arena.
- Encouraging the resident musiciams and music enthusiasts in the communities
to get together and working on projects.
- Acting as an umbrella body for and networking with artist to conduct musical
and dance performances/workshops.
- Composing and presenting inspiring and innovative cross cultural projects
with other forms of music.
- providing educational facilities and promote learning of music and different
art forms.
- provide a cultural bridge between India and Australia.
The
regular activities conducted by the academy have been project based:
- Organising music festivals annually to commemorate the great composers
of Karnatic music- Tyagaraja and Dikshitar- plus regualar high quality presentations
of leading overseas and local artists in popular venues patronized by all
sectors of the Australian Community.
- The initiation, of, and ongoing collaboration in the study of Karnatic
music at tertiary level at Monash University.
- Periodic chamber music concerts featuring student talent.
- Pioneering the formation of schools of Karnatic music to give formal instruction
at a wide range of levels.
- Release of Australia's first South Indian instrumental music double CD-
Rhythms and Ragas- featuring India's leading instrumentalists.
- Melbourne Ragas & Rhythms on 3MBS FM 103.5 on Mondays at 10:30 p.m. and
on Melbourne Community Television: the only radio program in Australia devoted
to Indian Classical Music.
- Arranging senior students / musicians to enrich their studies and experience
under the guidance of our patrons in India.
- Combining with leading musicians from other traditions in comissions to
produce contemporary east-west music in Australia and India.
- Publishing Jugal Bandhi, a student-run magazine devoted to Indian music
and Fine Arts in Australia. The above projects have been from time to time,
assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its
arts funding advisory body.
The founder directors of the Academy are: M.
Ravichandhira and Mrs. Marni Selvendra.
